Most people experience anxiety at some time in their life. Events such as job interviews or exams can make us feel anxious. This is perfectly normal. However if your worries are getting out of control, or you have extreme feelings of anxiety, which has an impact on your daily life, then you may wish to seek professional help.
Anxiety can have a big impact on you and can lead to a number of psychological and physical symptoms. Counselling can be an effective way to learn to manage anxiety.
Physical symptoms of Anxiety
- difficulty concentrating
- a sense of dread
- feeling constantly “on edge”
- being easily distracted
Psychological symptoms of Anxiety
- difficulty falling or staying asleep
- muscle aches and tension
- dry mouth
- excessive sweating
- shortness of breath
- stomach ache
Your symptoms may cause you to withdraw from seeing people, making it more difficult to go to work or socialise. This in turn can make you worry even more and negatively impact your self-esteem.
Counselling for Anxiety
In counselling we can look at what causes you to feel anxious and think about why that is. You will have the time and space to talk about what might seem like trivial things that make you feel anxious. Of course, in reality these things are not trivial at all, if they make you feel anxious then they matter. In counselling it is okay to talk about these things, I will be listening but no one else will hear. We can look at the situations that you find difficult and think about solutions that will work for you.
